John Kerry for President (11/1/05)

"The 1st Amendment protection is not a license for mischief on the part of journalists eager to do the government's bidding. To the contrary, it was conceived by the founders to prevent government from subverting the free press in an effort to misinform the public. Unfortunately, that is precisely what occurred here."

Robert Scheer, writing about how fifth columnists embedded in the fourth estate, most notably Judith Miller of The New York Times, have shattered the last illusion of a free and independent press -- and how, in concert with top White House officials, most notably (so far) Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, Scooter Libby, they stalled the investigation of their dirty tricks solely to deny John Kerry the presidency.

[They're everywhere, even here in River City, where The Oregonian's Fifth Columnist, David Reinhardt, marches in lockstep with the Neocons, right-right-right-right ... all in the name of balance. My foot! We need more journalists with the guts to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth -- and more editors willing (and able) to turn them loose. it's not hopeless yet. But it's getting there quick.]
