Steens Mountain and the Empty Quarter threatened with development

M heart is heavy. Steens Mountain is my spiritual home. What of the other places Gov. Tom McCall spoke of, places that make Oregon special? Shall we desecrate them all to perpetuate our energy-wasting way of life?

We need to cut consumption and curb population growth before this beautiful land of ours is overrun and even the Empty Quarter bristles with civilization.

Letter to The Oregonian, published February 9, 2010

[This was in response to a front page article on windmills and their destructive roads and infrastructure, and the development of resorts and vacation homes, in one of Oregon's premier wild and scenic areas.]
